Mechoui Alley, a narrow lane near the northern end of Jemaa El Fna on Derb Semmarine, is famed for its traditional whole-roasted lamb. Each morning, around 30 sheep are slow-roasted in underground clay ovens across three Mechoui stands. By around 11am, the tender meat is lifted from the ovens, ready to eat. The neck and shoulder are exceptionally succulent, while the baby ribs are especially prized. Simply season the meat with cumin and salt for an unforgettable taste of Marrakech. Although hygiene standards can be questionable, the rustic setting and extraordinary flavour make Mechoui Alley a memorable culinary experience worth seeking out.
