The name ‘Shila’ is on the tip of the tongue of Tel Aviv’s in-the-know crowd, and Sharon Cohen has made sure of it. Describing Shila as ‘the bar with the best food or the restaurant with the hottest bar’, one thing is certain: this is a fun-loving spot with a serious gastronomic heart, drawing a trendy crowd of regulars throughout its ten years in business. Cohen’s focus is firmly on fish and seafood, served raw, grilled or à la plancha, offering a modern taste of the Mediterranean through dishes such as shrimp carpaccio with smashed tomatoes, za’atar and almonds. At lunchtime, lighter salads and pasta take the lead. Growing in size in tandem with its reputation, Shila now spans two dining rooms, separated by glass partitions, as well as a bar and outdoor space – making it an ideal spot to settle in and linger well into the evening.
