Dumpling
Lin Long Fang, at 10 Jiangguo Dong Lu near Zhaozhou Lu, is often hailed as both the best and the most affordable spot for xiaolongbao in Shanghai. This unassuming hole-in-the-wall — a sister brand to the celebrated Jia Jia Tang Bao — more than lives up to its reputation. The proof is in the bowls of fiery chilli, the steaming baskets, and the astonishing value for money.
Here, simplicity reigns. While multiple variations of xiaolongbao are available, the original pork filling remains the benchmark. Delicate skins encase deeply savoury broth, best enjoyed with a dip of light vinegar and slivers of ginger. The onion and scallion noodles are equally compelling. Made to order and eaten immediately, the crab roe and pork xiaolongbao are widely considered about as good as it gets.
