Founded more than 30 years ago in Beijing’s Dongcheng District, Da Dong Roast Duck has grown into one of China’s leading destinations for modern Chinese cuisine, with nine locations across the capital. Housed within a restored Ming dynasty palace, the flagship offers an elegant dining setting where contemporary lighting and sleek design meet historic architecture.
Da Dong is synonymous with its signature super-lean roast duck. Departing from the traditional square oven, the kitchen employs an innovative spherical wood-fired oven, producing a version billed as a lighter, more refined take on the classic. The molasses-hued skin is delicately crisp with a gentle smokiness, while the meat remains tender and notably less fatty than traditional styles.
Alongside the customary cucumber, scallions and plum sauce, Da Dong presents an expanded array of condiments — minced garlic, granulated sugar, honeydew melon, pickled vegetables and tianmianjiang — plus sesame puffs in addition to the usual pancakes. While the roast duck is the undisputed centrepiece, the broader menu is extensive, showcasing the restaurant’s contemporary approach to Chinese fine dining.
