Baoyuan Jiaozi Wu

Dumpling

Baoyuan Jiaozi Wu had long been a local favourite in Beijing before a 2013 visit by U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew catapulted the sprawling dumpling house into viral fame. His low-key lunch came just weeks after Xi Jinping assumed the presidency and began sweeping anti-corruption campaigns aimed at curbing lavish official banquets of sea cucumber and Moutai. The bill for three? Just RMB 109 (about US$16) — a strikingly modest sum that captured national attention.

The restaurant is best known for its 五彩饺子 (wǔcǎi jiǎozi), or “five-colour dumplings,” naturally tinted with vegetable and fruit juices: purple from grape and blueberry with purple rice, red from tomato, green from spinach, orange from carrot and yellow from orange. While the rainbow hues offer undeniable novelty, it’s the generously filled, expertly boiled dumplings that turn this homely spot into a true dining destination.
