Al Baraka Gas Station

An amazing find are the Tagines offered up by a gas station on the old road from Marrakech to Fez. The 20-minute drive takes you to this unlikely roadside institution where roasted local chickens or Atlas mountain lamb are slow cooked in clay Tagines over a wood fire. The soft, tender lamb is served with thinly sliced white onion that tastes of sweet cabbage, a dash of fresh tomato, prunes and a single spicy pepper. A selection of delicious ingredients melts into a brothy, juicy plate to be mopped up with fresh-baked bread. None of the fancy hotels or riads in Marrakech even come close to the quality of these simple masterpieces.
